Real Skies is a new feature that was released in Lumion 9. It’s an effect you can apply as a part of your photo or video export process.

These skies are very realistic HDR images that are automatically placed in the background of your renderings. They apply both accurate lighting, as well as a photorealistic background. I believe there are 39 of these skies, all of which look like they’ve been added from the website Poliigon.com, which is one of my favorite texture/material websites.

You can adjust the brightness, rotation, and overall model brightness in the sliders.

I like what Lumion’s doing here – instead of adding an upload option, they’ve curated a bunch of REALLY great looking HDR backgrounds. While this is a bit limiting in your options, it also means that you can’t just upload any HDR image, but instead HAVE to use the ones that work well with Lumion – this pretty much guarantees that any rendering created with Lumion will have a great looking background.
